Next I found one that had NO growth hormones and no antibiotics, SCORE! But that package, despite the words "all natural" all over it, didn't say anything about being Free Range or Cage free -- and that scares me.
Lucky for you I can make this simple, Meat is muscle, Muscle can be made two ways, the Healthy way is to eat more protein and exercise, Sounds about right doesn't it? Well then how does this vegetarian (IE CORN) fed chicken raised in a tiny cage actually make muscle -- steroids. Yes the bad steroids, the kind athletes get banned for using. We tell our teenage athletes that steroids are bad, because they are, those chickens get sick, steroids, amongst other problems, weaken the immune system, so the chickens are then fed a regular diet of antibiotics to fend off chicken infections, so when they do get them -- they are drug-resistant.
Steroid muscle isn't exactly healthy muscle, and certainly not what I intend to feed my kids, so I keep looking.
The package said nowhere that it was steroid free. Since the company took the time to mention the lack of growth hormones, I was pretty sure they didn't leave off that detail on accident. Too bad, since that was the all natural store brand.
I almost gave up then I found a cage-free, steroid free, antibiotic free, but vegetarian fed chicken -- well at least It's not fed cannibalized chicken by-products, and it was cage free -- so maybe it did help itself to a few bugs. It's in my oven right now. YUM, So I sat down to write my blog and do a little research and you know what, they LIED! Well at least in 2010 they lied, in 2011 they apparently changed their practices to be more humane. Ok so for all my research this is a healthy chicken, at least now in 2012, I hope. But, they got busted once, Short of personally touring their farm, I'm not sure I really trust them today, but in the interest of living a balanced and harmonious life, I am forgiving them for lying to me 2 years ago, and Praying that they are being honest with me today.
