Goals are believable, achievable, and just hard enough to stay believable but remain a source of motivation -- in other words, you goal can't be too easy or it won't motivate you.
This is not to say goals cannot be big -- I always encourage people to dream big, but you've got to believe in yourself!
So this year Make it happen, Set goals and write them down. Using your goals, come up with a set of daily affirmations. Affirmations are based on your goals, they are set in the present and in the positive. Affirmations are a statement that includes how you feel. So if your goal is to weigh 160 lbs by July 1st 2013, then your affirmation would be "I am healthy and energetic at 150lbs" Affirmations should be repeated often. I advise starting with index cards and keeping them handy, read and repeat them several times throughout the day. eventually you'll end up memorizing them.
Affirmations work. They work on a filter in your brain which is designed to filter out information you do not need. Affirmations tell your brain that you want and need this information. For example in a crowded mall, you likely cannot understand what people around you are saying. Your brain filters this into a background "hum" but if someone should call out your name, your brain filters this in and you hear and understand this. By using affirmations, you filter in the helpful things you may otherwise not have noticed, things that will help you reach your goals.
Also using your goals, make a vision board. Post this where you will see it every day. A vision board is a poster with your goals upon it, usually in a visual form, such as photos. So if your goal is to buy a car, pick out the car you want, go to the dealership and ask to have your picture taken in the driver's seat. If your goal is to take an exotic vacation, find a photo of the spot you wish to visit.
The last step of course is to take action. Do something every day to bring you closer to achieving your goal. Keeping your goals in front of you using affirmations and a vision board help remind you every day. So this year, go for it, set goals and go after them, you will be very glad you did.
Happy New Year!
