The Kill-a-Watt is a great power and money-saving tool. I am fortunate because my public library loans this out. This is a fabulous device that will surely pay for itself but after you've gone through the house and tested everything. I can see it becoming obsolete. I used this at my office and my home and then brought it back to the library. It would certainly make sense to split this with a friend or pass it on as a gift to a new homeowner when done. If you do purchase one, no worries, the item absolutely pays for itself quickly.
You simply plug this item into the wall and then plug anything into it. This allows you to see how much electricity is being used by the device. You can check the coffee maker while making coffee, but also when it's just plugged in and ready to turn itself on automatically, you can see how much power the little light saying "I'm ready for when you press the remote control" is costing you. You can see how much it costs to leave the phone charger plugged in when not charging. This device can be a real eye opener and will help you balance comfort, convenience, and cost so you can decide what changes are worth making. It served as a major motivator to me to turn my computers off when not in use as they cost quite a bit in hibernate mode.
